Following a Notice of Motion from Councillor Wayne McAndrew, Lithgow Council has resolved to convene and facilitate a summit dedicated to determining the best possible strategy to assist those suffering mental illness.
“Our society has come a long way in recent years in better understanding mental illness and in dealing with the stigma faced by people living with it,” said Lithgow City Council Mayor Stephen Lesslie.
“However, Council recognises that there is much more to do and is looking to identify what services are needed for our Local Government Area, how best to ensure that these services are brought to our area and how to ensure that best practice care is available and delivered to those affected by mental health issues.”
The summit will be facilitated by well known local GP and Associate Professor of Medicine at Notre Dame University, Doctor John Dearin, and will include a panel of both experts and people living with mental illness in some way.
The Summit will be held on Wednesday 14 December 2016 in the Millennium Room of Lithgow Workmen’s Club, starting at 6:00pm. The community is welcome and should contact Council on 6354 9999 to book a place.
Creating a healthy community and providing opportunities and facilities for a healthy lifestyle forms part of Council’s strategy to Strengthen our Community in the Community Strategic Plan 2026.
