Putting their names up in lights were skip Dave Robson, Peter Kearney and Graham Pitt who put in a commanding display to take the 2016 title 22-15 from Kevin Shorney, Wayne Allan and Ian Northey.
The title this year was contested over a new format of two-bowl triples over 25 ends and such was the strength of the win, the 25th end was not needed to be played.
Robson and his teammates were never headed, despite a late surge from Shorney and Co late in the game when they came from 20-4 down to trail by eight shots with only three ends left in the title quest.
Two shots on the 22nd end gave Robson, Kearney and Pitt a 10-shot lead. Despite winning the next two ends Shorney, Allan and Northey could only pick up three shots, conceding the game on the 24th end.
The champions won their way to the final with a 28-16 semi final win over Jim Lahache, Peter Hardie and Ken Potter while Shorney went through thanks to a tight 24-22 win over Kerry Clarke, Peter Rutherford and Bob Kiernan in his semi final.
First round results: Lahache, Hardie and Potter def. Gary Sutherland, Maurie Nugent and Don Kenniff 21-20; Robson, Kearney and Pitt def. John Perry, Jim Kelly and Don Kipp 29-10; Clarke, Rutherford and Kiernan def. Col Wotton, Jack Rayner and Athol Roach 28-23; and Shorney, Allan and Northey def. Al Kenniff, Iggy Vadkerti and Richie Bilby 25-21.
The McMurtrie mixed pairs title was decided on Tuesday when Michael and Pam Johnson survived an early scare to triumph 24-11 over Fay King and Athol Roach.
King and Roach won the first four ends to lead 7-nil before the Johnsons hit back, going from 9-2 down after seven ends to win the next six ends to set up a six-shot lead at 15-9 after 13 ends.
The win by the Johnsons was sealed with five shots on the final two ends to take the 2016 title 24-11.
In their semi final the Johnsons defeated another husband and wife team in Col and Cheryl Wotton 18-10 while King and Roach won a hard fought semi final 19-15 over Peter Kearney and Maree Stewart.
Social bowls: Sunday’s mixed event was won by Dave Robson and Don Kipp with 14+18, the runners-up being Warren Kennedy and June Barnes with 13+14.
Saturday saw both greens in use thanks to numbers being boosted by the visit to Lithgow of the Windang Travelling Bowlers.
Friday’s mixed event went to the McMurtrie mixed pairs semi final winners Mike and Pam Johnson with an 11+8 margin, from Don Kipp and Mike Wholohan’s 10+5 scoreline.
