“Homeless people come in all the time and we always fix them up with a cup of coffee,” Ms Monaghan said.

“I made a man raisin toast recently and he said it was the first meal he had eaten in two weeks.”

This week is Anti-Poverty Week, and though October 16-22 is specially marked as a time to help those living below the poverty line, Ms Monaghan does it all year round.

News of Ms Monaghan’s generosity has spread far and wide, and caught the ear of the St Vincent de Paul Society who asked her to take part in the initiative.

If you drop into Vanilla this week, think about donating the cost of a cup of coffee at the register, a simple way to help out those who try to make do with much less.

According to St Vincent de Paul Society, ten donations can provide one hour of counselling for a woman trying to escape an abusive relationship.

Ms Monaghan said to spare a thought for others who are constantly in need.

“Some people have no option but to sleep on trains every night… everyone should take some time to get behind a good cause.”
