The crash, which happened around 3:42pm on Thursday, was between a truck and a camper van which the 48-year-old was driving.
Initial investigations indicate that the van was travelling on the incorrect side of the road, according to Blue Mountains Local Area Command.
The truck jackknifed after the collision, blocking traffic in both directions.
The van’s driver was trapped for a lengthy period of time while rescue worked to free the driver.
He was flown to Liverpool Hospital and there is no update on his condition at this time.
The driver of the truck appeared to be unhurt, according to emergency services.
Both lanes of the Bells Line of Road were closed after the accident, and reopened around 8:55pm that night.
