Nightingale is always a contender at the Opens and is keen to add more to his impressive list, especially the Lithgow Open that he let slip through his fingers last year.
The star left hander returned the best stableford score of the day to take out A-grade with the good score of 40 points.
It was a successful day for Nightingale, who after shooting a two under par score backed up in the afternoon to score the winning goal for Workies in his hockey grand final.
The good scores have come out of A-grade with the runner up in A-grade going to another big hitter Dave Thompson with 38.
The winner in B-grade was Scott Hamment with 37 points on a count back from runner-up Shannon Johns while the C-grade winner was Peter Haley on 34 points on a count back from John Griffiths.
Best scratch scores of the day went to: A- grade Ian Nightingale, B Scott Hamment 81 and C John Griffiths 94.
Nearest the pin awards: Rob Ritchie on the second; Kobe Hunter on the fourth; Shannon Johns; Ian Nightingale on the thirteenth and Dave Thompson on the 18th.
Friday competition: Winner Brett Scanlon 30 points.
Nearest the pins Gary Walker on the 9th and Max Nightingale on the 18th.
Tomorrow's event will be a stroke event with the monthly medals sponsored by Ron Evans Painting held in conjunction. A reminder that the Lithgow Open will be held on Sunday October 9.
