NOW that the Olympics and the Lindt siege inquest are done and dusted I wonder what the armchair experts will now find to criticise. Both events copped a barrage of criticism where day after day it seemed that any failures had been: A – Amateur Hour or B – Lack of willpower. Our athletes did their best against the world’s best and because of a shortfall in the medal haul both they and their coaches should be subjected to a public whipping on their return from the City of Christ the Redeemer.  In the meantime there was no shortage of ‘experts’ telling them how they should have done it.  Meanwhile back at that siege inquest the ‘experts’ and frantic sections of the media were having a field day.  One could easily have believed that, like the Rio Olympians, the cops had ‘tanked’ under pressure.  Rarely have there been so many vicious words directed at people involved for the first time in such a life and death situation. Any fair-minded critic would have expected some praise for ensuring most of the hostages survived.  But for many in the community ‘fair mindedness’ just doesn’t count when floggings are in the air. Finally, it’s not often we agree with radio blabbermouth Alan Jones — in fact this will be a first and possibly last — but he was on the ball when he said the open scrutiny of the siege drama must surely have provided other madmen in our community with an invaluable insight into police operations.
