The Planning Assessment Commission approved the project back in 2015, subject to strict conditions, including the requirement for an Independent Monitoring Panel to provide advice on the mine’s Extraction Plan for Longwall 419. This advice has been received and accepted by the Department who have assessed and approved Centennial Coal’s extraction plan – with strict conditions for the company to follow to ensure swamp vegetation is appropriately monitored for impacts.
Centennial are required to strengthen their swamp monitoring network through a range of measures to track whether mining impacts are within the consent’s strict performance measures. They are also required to lodge another $2 million offset bond, additional to the $2 million bond already lodged, to cover any potential impacts.
