IT is hard enough to win a major event like the Zig Zag Motel Cup, but to defend your title from last year is pretty special.
This was the case of the 2016 winner Ian Nightingale who now has his name on the trophy for winning the scratch event last year and the nett title this year.
Nightingale finished with an impressive 67 nett (70 off the stick) with his round including an eagle two on the tough eighth hole.
Winners are only eligible to win one section of the Cup and although Nightingale finished with a 70 off the stick, the prize was passed onto the next best.
The winner of the scratch event for 2016 was champion golfer Darren Hunter who has won just about every title possible at the club and on the mountains.
Both golfers and the club thanked Michael Inzitari and his family of the Zig Zag Motel for their continued support of this prestigious event and other events throughout the year.
Scoring during the Zig Zag Motel Cup was extremely tough with the pins and markers back as far as possible, the holes put in tricky positions and the fairways not giving up any run at all.
All this and some nasty weather that lashed the course throughout the day bringing misty rain, wind and cold temperatures so for those who played well they really deserved their good scores.
Those to figure in the three grade wins were:
In A grade, the winner was Damian Marjoram with 72 nett.
Marjoram hit off late and was in the worst of the weather.
Runner-up was Max Nightingale with 74 nett.
The best score of the day came from Bob Charlton B grade who played some great golf to return a score of 68 nett while Michael Saville was runner-up on 70 nett.
In C grade, DarkyMillar was in top form to card a total of 71 nett while Paul Bailey was runner-up on 75 nett.
Best scratch scores of the day went to A grade Anthony Boza (79), B grade Travis Cameron (82) and C grade DaveMuir (92).
Nearest the pin awards were: R Buck (Toronto) on the second (184cm); Rob Arnott (474cm); Darky Millar on the ninth (84cm); Ian Nightingale on the 13th (181cm) and Frank Mantle on the 18th (433cm).
Those to play well and figure in the ball competition were Frank Mantle, Scott Hamment, Jeff Geddes, Daniel Buckens, Rob Arnott, Mark Willmott, David Titcume, Greg Hunter, Don Farnsworth, John Murnane, Al Seymour and Ryan Millar.
The toughness of the course was shown by the fact that balls went out to 76 nett neat.
