ON page three today we draw attention to the urgent need for support for Airly mine at next week’s latest PAC hearing. While all the attention was focussed on the Springvale debacle this one slipped under the radar. But you can be sure it hasn’t eluded the attention of the radical elements and self interests determined to close down our mining industry — and with it our economy. Springvale had 300 miners to call on; Airly has far less but their jobs are just as important so read page three then do your bit. Quickly!
Council’s effort was on the nose
NO one can deny that Lithgow Council does a great job maintaining our sporting fields and other recreation areas. But sometimes they’re on the nose. Literally! And that was the case on Thursday when top dressing was carried out at the Tony Luchetti Sportsground on Thursday. With a light breeze in support the resultant odour was evident all over town from early morning. Council has assured the column that the smell will have departed before today’s major event at the showground with a vintage machinery expo from 10am, the arrival of the Camp Quality Tractor Trek some time after three o’clock and a fundraiser in the ballroom tonight. Hopefully, as promised, the dressing material will have degraded (in fact there was little evidence yesterday). But the show society and Camp Quality need your support so put a peg on your nose if needs be and go along. If you don’t like pegged noses go along anyway.
Just a start
OUR suggestion this week for a mural on all sides of the Coates Avenue underpass has brought some interested comment and one caller who described it as a ‘disgraceful idea’. We dunno why it would be ‘disgraceful’; it’s only old brickwork, not the handsome sandstone like the James Street structure just up the line where we would never suggest murals. But we also had another comment on the need for murals or sculpture to fill the bricked in ‘window’ cavities on the western side of the Visitor Centre at Bowenfels. It would need to be something reasonably upmarket, perhaps sculpture similar to the sort of thing created for Westfund and Taronga Park by Lithgow’s Tim Johnman. Any more ideas folks?
The chaos season?
HOPEFULLY we’re wrong but many observers are predicting traffic chaos with the school holidays and the roadworks on all sides of Lithgow. Major works are under way at Hartley, Forty Bends, Clarence and Marrangaroo so there’s no escape. Last time the RMS pulled on Marrangaroo roadwork in the lead up to the Bathurst car races there were huge delays. And Bathurst’s big weekend is again rapidly approaching. Just stay home; it’s less of a hassle.
Their big day out
IT was a special day for young cancer patients at Katoomba’s Scenic World this week when 70 youngsters from Camp Quality were treated to a day out at the famous attraction to mark its 70th anniversary on the Mountains tourist scene. The kids and family members loved it. Scenic World will continue its support for Camp Quality by donating a dollar for every child visiting the attraction during the Spring school vacation. Today it will be Lithgow’s turn to show support when the Tractor Trek arrives at Lithgow showground for the Show Society Machinery Day followed by a fundraiser at the Civic Ballroom tonight.
