The team was without John Fenton and Blake Edwards, and in the first half struggled to contain Illawarra’s outside shooters.
At the same time Lazers just could not seem to have their shots converted into points to be behind 43-26 at half time.
The Lazers entered the change room to talk it over with their coaching staff, who were focused on playing positively, controlling the boards and an emphasis on defence.
This was exactly how the team approached the second half; working for each other, and by taking good shots, watched them start to score.
Kieran Osborn and Levi Roberts led the way, as the team turned the half time deficit around.
Kurt Northey stepped up under the basket and together with Ryley Hughes got some really important rebounds.
Guards Matt Hughes, Adam Marjoram and Nathan Akamarmoi set up some good plays for the big men.
It was a satisfying win for the Lazers, and they showed glimpses of the team work and form that took them to last year’s grand final.
Top Lazers scorers: Kieran Osborn 19, Levi Roberts 13, Matt Hughes, Riley Hughes and Kurt Northey 10 each.
The Lazers next game is this Sunday against Canberra Gunners at midday.
Lazers would also like to thank their sponsors Lithgow Workmens Club, Lean and Bennett Toyota and Holden, Commercial Hotel, Lithgow Mercury and Radio 90.
