The first grade match against Cowra Eagles was a real battle throughout with a great strike coming from Joel Thompson’s boot in the 30th minute to put Workies 1-nil up, a score that stood until half time.
The score remained deadlocked until Cowra knocked one away to even up the game.
The remaining time had both sides continuing the struggle only for the score to remain locked up until full time.
Chances were continually made for the remaining exchanges but both sides respective goalkeepers kept their nets intact despite Cowra’s golden opportunity in the shadows of the second half.
The chance to snatch all three competition points went begging for Cowra when Zac Kerr’s late shot from the spot hit the post leaving the match all square at 1-all.
“I was very impressed by the way the boys played,” Workies coach Brad Luka said.
“We came together as a team and are continuing to show why we hold the championship.”
The best players in first grade were Joel Thompson, Matt Nunan and Scott Hookham.
Considering Workies’ preparation was three wins from three games, Cowra coach Sean Leyland was understandably impressed with the result and also found the lighter side of the penalty situation after the match.
“We’re getting there,” he said.
“We probably should of won it but we missed another penalty.
“It was unlucky, it just didn’t go in after hitting the inside of the post.”
In second grade it was a 2-1 as Workies took on Bathurst on Saturday.
Hayden Ticehurst and Bayden Charlton were the scorers.
Workies had good ball possession for the majority of the game in Sunday’s game against Cowra with Jack Jones getting an early goal from a free kick.
The boys kept battling through the half to get another goal from Jordan Fordham in the 34th minute.
Workies come back fighting in the second half and were unlucky as Cowra got into good position and got a goal late in the half.
“They worked amazing as a team, as they held good possession through out especially when they played a double header,” coach Kevin Walding said.
Best players for second grade for the weekend were Hayden Ticehurst, Jack Jones, Daniel Bosman, Ryan Sutor and Andrew German.
The boys play at home this weekend with first and second grade taking on Bathurst CSU and third grade tackles Panda FC.
