The Lithgow Workmens Club is constructing a 38 room motel in Tank Street, on the northern side of the present club building.
Planning is well advanced, approvals are in place after a number of delays, and Lithgow Council was told this week that construction is due to begin early next month.
The main delay has been in finalising approvals through the Mines Subsidence Board after very old mine workings were identified beneath the site.
The company that was awarded the contract has in recent days been advertising in the Lithgow Mercury for expressions of interest from local sub contractors wishing to be involved in the major project.
The project includes a 38 room motel and some refurbishment in the existing club complex.
The Workmens Club project is not the only show in town to demonstrate evidence of resilience in our economy.
In recent days the construction site hoardings have come down on the redevelopment of the former Pricebusters store in Main Street, next door to the library.
An entirely new frontage has been revealed after months of internal and external fitout.
The exact nature of the planned future for the ‘new’ building has not yet been disclosed but the property was purchased by a Bathurst firm understood to be involved in the dental health profession.
A huge amount of work is also continuing on the redevelopment of the former Commonwealth Bank building in Main Street.
The three storey building was purchased by Westfund and is being converted to offices to accommodate three government departments.
Builders have only recently completed gutting the interior of the old bank and work is now under way on the new facilities.
Across town earthworks are also under way on Hoskins Court, a major townhouse development on the site of the former RSL sporting facilities in Hoskins Avenue.
