The idea of the fund is that if players suffer injuries that are long term, money from the fund will be available to help with expenses.
The first presentation of cheques were made at a training session with former Wolves legend Kip Maranda explaining the fund and calling on players to present the cheques.
The first recipients were Jake Gale, Brodie Casey and Darcy Allan who were all off work for extended periods in 2014.
“The money for the fund is raised by the players themselves at social nights that include auctions and other money making events,” Maranda said.
“Unfortunately, we have had to set the cap at a figure for each player injured so that there will be money in the fund if other players need help.
“Hopefully we will never have to use the fund, but it is has been put in place for such an occasion.”
Under 18 coach Ross Harrington, who has been involved in rugby league in Sydney and all over the state, said this is a great initiative and one the players are keen to get involved in.
“I am nor sure, but I think it is the first of its kind where players raise money for such a fund.”
The Wolves are in full training for the competition start on Sunday April 12 at the Lithgow Showground when they will take on last year’s grand finalists Cowra in what should be a good test to see where they are up to at that stage of the season.
Training for the Wolves in all grades including the women’s Oz League squad is on every Tuesday and Thursday at the showground at 6pm and everyone is welcome to come down and have a run.
