Shortly after 7.30pm yesterday, emergency services were called to Rutters Ridge Road at Oberon, after reports a woman had been seriously injured.
Police from Chifley Local Area Command were told a 45-year-old woman was seated in the back of a utility that was travelling along the roadway herding cattle.
The woman has fallen from the vehicle and struck her head on the roadway, sustaining critical head injuries.
The 38-year-old female driver stopped the vehicle immediately and rendered first aid.
The injured woman was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being airlifted to Liverpool Hospital. She has since undergone emergency surgery and remains in a critical condition in hospital.
The driver was spoken to by police and taken to Oberon Hospital for mandatory drug and alcohol testing.
Specialist officers from the Crash Investigation Unit attended and conducted an examination of the scene.
Inquiries into the matter are continuing.
