This was a result not seen before in recent competitions and demonstrates the closeness of the teams.
Slices won the first four sets 5-4, showing remarkable consistency.
Hot Shots rallied in the last two sets however with the previous four set results, it was not going to be enough to give them the match.
Kristy Wyrzykowski and Sandy Cox teamed well together to win 5-4 over Kim Heath and Robyn Patterson with some great net work on display by Wyrzykowski and great baseline shot placement by Patterson.
In the final set Wyrzykowski and Kristy Aylott were effective against Kim Heath and June Kelly, again winning 5-4 for their team.
Slices won the match in four sets, 28 games over Hot Shots’ two sets, 26 games.
June Kelly played very well all day for Slices, particularly as she was playing up a level.
Kristy Wyrzykowski played very strongly on the net, having lost none of her agility with her baby bump.
Thank you to Robyn Patterson, who played consistently well all day, for filling in for Slices.
From being well behind, Slices have been steadily improving their position on the leader board over recent weeks and are now leading with 67 points, followed by Hot Shots on 61½ points.
In the Sluggers versus Slammers match, it looked as though it would be another round of evenly matched tennis and a number of games certainly brought multiple deuces.
After the first two sets were split 5-4, Rhonda Thompson and Janene Graham had a blinder against Julie Grant and Margie Lowe, winning 9-0.
Here Kanimbldon Cup women’s champion Graham showed her style, particularly on the net, as she returned every shot within reach and also those that weren’t.
Teamed with Debbie Williams, Graham followed this set up with a good 6-3 win over Grant and Lowe, setting up her team.
Williams produced another win for Sluggers, albeit a close one at 5-4, teamed with captain Rhonda Thompson, who also played some very good tennis in the heat.
Slammers took their second set for the day in the final set, when Carol Carver and Margie Lowe won 6-3 over Rhonda Thompson and Janene Graham, however the gap in the games score was too wide to close and Sluggers won in four sets, 32 games over Slammers’ two sets, 22 games.
Best for Sluggers was Rhonda Thompson and Carol Carver played consistently for Slammers.
In round 11 this week Sluggers play Slices and Slammers meet Hot Shots; duty club is Slices.
