They have also suffered some hard times with the loss of one of their patrons.
With the recent death of one of Lithgow Red Cross’ patrons Marie Evans, the branch has lost someone who dedicated a large part of her life to helping others.
Marie had been a member since the early 1950s for about 64 years.
She had seen difficult times when the branch nearly closed due to lack of support but the branch was kept alive by a small band of members, such as Marie, who never gave up.
The remaining patrons of the Branch have themselves clocked up distinguished service corresponding, in total, to about 135 years: Dr Judy White since 1955 (59 years); Ethel Blackadder 1972 (42 years), Jean Crook 1980 (34 years) and until recently, with Marie’s service of close to 65 years made a total of around 200 years; an amazing achievement.
With Australian Red Cross this year celebrating 100 years, it can easily be seen that local women have much to be proud of.
Several interesting fundraisers have been held this year with a Red Cross barbecue sponsored by Bunnings, a film session of “Miss Potter” at the community cinema in September, catering for a function at the Meadow Flat Hall and currently a raffle is being held.
President Norma Stephenson thanks the Lithgow community for its support for Lithgow Red Cross this year.
This has enabled Lithgow Branch to forward approximately $14,000 to Australian Red Cross to help fund their important projects.
Lithgow Branch of the Red Cross always welcomes new members and meets at 1.30pm on the first Thursday of the month at Red Cross House, located in Queen Elizabeth Park, Main Street Lithgow.
