Despite a review into mental health every 30 months since the Second World War, Australia still has many issues with the systems in place and often people can struggle to get the help that they need.

The theme for Mental Health Month this year was Be YOUnique.

A free barbecue was held in Cook Street Plaza last week to help raise awareness and reduce the stigma surrounding mental health and mental heath issues.

The event was a collaboration between Aftercare and Lithgow TAFE’s Community Service students.

There was plenty of staff on hand to answer any queries, as well as sample bags packed full of useful items and information.

There was even a spot for people to sit and play the Djembe (a type of drum).

Aftercare’s Regional Manager, Kate Snars, was delighted with the turnout.

“Today is about spreading a message of community participation and inclusion,” Kate said.

“It’s been very busy.

“We even had to double our order of sample bags, people have been very interested,” she said.
