THE usual odour of diesel fumes was replaced by the not unpleasant smell of fresh paint at the weekend when a big team of workmen carried out a welcome maintenance program at the Lithgow Rail interchange.

It was first major freshening up carried out at the interchange since it opened in 1991, providing the link between passenger trains at the end of the busy Blue Mountains Line and the Countrylink coaches to serve areas further west.
Painters were busy providing a neat new paint job to the entire concourse area and the access from the platforms as well as around the coach pick-up area at the Railway Parade frontage.
On the platform another group was hard at work on the foundations for a new all weather canopy to be constructed at the eastern end in November.
Work was also under way on the track itself where further stabilisation of the cutting with a concrete mat was under way.
This follows on other improvements carried out on the platform some weeks ago as part of the ongoing upgrade program.
The work will provide a welcome boost to council’s current planning for a CBD renewal program.
