Now about that fountain .. !
IF our readers have good ideas to assist council in its planning for the Lithgow business district revitalisation most are keeping them to themselves. Perhaps they’re keeping their powder dry for a late onslaught. But some ideas are trickling in and one interesting suggestion stands out. Replace the fountain in Queen Elizabeth Park with something easier on the eye. According to our correspondent the only good thing about the Festival Fountain is that it’s unique — ‘.. no one else would want it’. Now while artistic merit is in the eye of the beholder it’s not the first time we’ve heard similar comments about the merits of this park feature. The highlight is the pile of boulders brought in from a local quarry as the centrepiece of the fountain when it was donated to the city from proceeds of a Festival of the Valley many moons ago. Our caller pointed out that the control box beside the fountain is also too big and too intrusive by today’s standards. Any more opinions on this one? Maybe move the Festival Fountain to Cook Street Plaza to drown out any potential sound effects from the public loo proposed for that site? We’re open to suggestions.

One way mayhem
ON the subject of the CBD revitalisation we regret to announce that the one way traffic proposal for Main Street is still breathing, years after most of us felt it was dead and buried. When the possibility was mentioned in passing at the latest meeting of council the chairman of the council traffic committee Peter Pilbeam confirmed that this and ‘all options are on the table’. So now let’s have some comments on that one too. Last time it was seriously proposed it went down like a lead balloon in most quarters.
