WE’VE been fairly spoilt with the remarkably mild first month of winter but ‘real’ winter was bound to arrive sooner or later. And Weather Bureau forecasts issued yesterday indicated that this is the week to rug up with quite a chilly cocktail coming our way now that the inevitable south westerlies have developed. There was a little bit of everything on the menu for much of the highlands, including blizzards. Sounds like fun and yesterday the deep chill had already blown in, indicating that it would indeed get worse before it gets better.
Backward steps
REGULAR correspondent Lorraine Cook is back on the war trail trying to get some common sense into train timetables on the Blue Mountains Line. When the new timetable came into effect a few months there was one particular change that has irritated a lot of people. The trains no longer stop at Westmead, creating a real issue now for the many who travel from the west to attend Westmead Hospital for any and many reasons. It’s now a case of get there the best way you can, which usually involves the inconvenience of changing trains at Parramatta and backtracking. Clearly the public need was not a consideration when planning the changes to the Intercity timetable. As Lorraine correctly points out: “This is an important medical stop for many people from the Blue Mountains and beyond seeking medical care.” Lorraine is again lobbying State Member and Local Government Minister Paul Toole to have a word in the Transport Minister’s ear.
