War time monuments vandalised

FAMILIES with links to wartime veterans are infuriated at the desecration by graffiti vandals of a Lithgow war memorial.

The monument — officially the Ex POW Memorial — on the Scenic Hill overlooking Lithgow was erected as a lasting tribute to the doctors and nurses who had cared for prisoners of war during World War Two.

It was erected through the efforts of former prisoners of the Japanese, most of whom are now deceased.

Mindless vandals have attacked the memorial, leaving their scrawl on all four sides of the structure.

Further graffiti is on the entrance wall near the Chifley Road and on a nearby electricity installation controlling warning lights during inclement weather.

It is not clear when the vandalism occurred but it was reported yesterday after the daughter of a wartime prisoner of war visited the site.
