The truck and dog trailer from a quarry company was fully loaded with sand being delivered for the resurfacing program at the City Courts tennis complex.
It was being driven across the southern end of the Glanmire adjacent to the tennis courts when the rear nearside dual wheels of the truck crashed through the concrete lid of the stormwater drain.
The truck was left stranded with the rear wheels in the drain and the offside front wheel in the air.
The trailer, with its heavy load, remained on the canal lid which appeared also at risk of a further collapse.
Two mobile cranes and a heavy duty tow truck were at the scene yesterday afternoon confronting the difficult task of removing the stranded rig.
A fire brigade hazmat unit was also sent to the scene because of a risk of a fuel spill into the drain then nearby Farmers Creek.
A council spokesman said the drain was the main stormwater outlet between the central part of Lithgow near the Valley Plaza and Farmers Creek.
It had been carrying a torrent of water during last week’s flood rains.
