It has been an incredible start to the year with students from Wallerawang selected in three Western Region teams for state representation and now the rugby league team has achieved success at Portland as part of the Peachey shield gala days held throughout Western NSW.
The team is coached by Corey Stockton whose knowledge of and passion for Rugby league has ensured this team of mixed experienced and ability rugby league players have developed both their skill level and confidence.
Corey is thanked for the time and commitment he has given and will continue to give to the senior rugby league team.
This team surpassed all expectations on the day and this was attributed to a couple of things: The support and guidance of their coach; and the skill and leadership abilities of Pacey Stockton, Dylan Miles and Thomas Fraser who were able to bring the rest of the team with along with them.
They are very talented boys and they are wished continued success.
Also contributing were the developing skills of Year 5 students who were polite, who listened and who tried their hardest all day.
They had a never give up attitude and determination.
Sam Lane demonstrates talent and speed, Riley Jones is a force to be reckoned with even though he is the smallest member of the team, Charlie Bray in his second year of league and Kyle McMillan continues to develop his rugby league skills, with Jai Elliot, Ethan Van Der Velden and Sam Petersen pulling on the boots for the first time and certainly demonstrating their change from soccer has been a positive one.
All these boys contributed to the team’s success in the Peachey Shield.
In their first game they came up against neighbouring school Lithgow Primary, coming away with a convincing win and then followed on with marginal wins against Oberon PS and All Hallows (team two).
This placed them confidently into the semi finals where they came up against neighbouring school Cooerwull.
This started off as a reasonably evenly matched game, but Wallerawang soon demonstrated they were too strong.
This meant a place in the finals against the All Hallows number one team, who had defeated Kandos by several tries.
This game was also very evenly matched with All Hallows winning on the bell five tries to four.
There were definitely no losers between these two teams, with all in attendance extremely proud of both the effort and the sportsmanship of the Wallerawang senior team.
Pacey Stockton has a very good ability to read the game and was able to set up many of the tries for his teammates, along with scoring some along the way himself.
During the day five games were played the try tally was as: Pacey (6), Dylan (17), Riley (2), Thomas (4), Sam Lane (4), Sam Petersen, Jai Elliot and Ethan Van Der Velden (all 1).
The team now progresses to the finals day in Dubbo on June 26.
In the meantime they will play in the PSSA competition against Cudgegong Valley and this will happen early term two.
