Max Nightingale is the Portland Open 2008 champion after winning a sudden death play off against Bathurst’s Kerry Stait.
Players from eight visiting clubs joined Portland’s golfers to contest the 2008 Raffan Park Open.
Everybody enjoyed perfect golf conditions, with the course in great condition.
Winner on the day was Lithgow’s Max Nightingale who defeated Bathurst’s Kerry Stait in a playoff, after both players returned to the club house with three over par scores of 73.
After the first three hole playoff both players were still equal, so a sudden death situation started.
It then took three holes for the result to be decided with Nightingale taking the day, finishing with par, on the third sudden death hole.
Ex-Portland golfer Dave Caddis, now playing out of Branxton in the Hunter Valley, took out the B grade scratch event with a very good 81 off the stick.
In doing so he relegated his father to second place after Ted Caddis came in with 85.
Handicap section winners and runners up were:
A grade: Jamie Sharp 66 nett winner, G McGovern (Springwood) 67 nett runner up.
B grade: Paul Cinat 65 nett winner, Brad Cornwell 66 nett runner up.
Lithgow juniors dominated that event with Ian Nightingale taking the scratch event with his 85, and Dylan Banning coming in with a 69 nett to take the handicap section.
Portland had a winner in the veteran’s division with Bob Roberts taking that win with 68 nett, from John Wren from Lithgow with 70 nett.
Nearest the pins went to A grade Dennis Hartfield 72cm and B grade Ted Caddis 345cm.
Longest drives: A grade Shane Green, B grade Robert Champion.
Nearest the pin in two shots was Gary Johns (102cm).
The committee thanks those who helped throughout last week, especially Laurie and David Caddis and Ian Miles.
Thanks also to greenkeeper Andy O’Brien for his work during the week.
The Mixed Canadian event held on Saturday was taken out by Narelle Barnes and Dennis Hartfield for the second year running when they came in with 73 3/8 nett.
The club thanks the following sponsors for their support which is greatly appreciated: Lithgow City Council, Ironwing, Easyview Blinds, Delta Electricity, Springvale Colliery, Masta-Mix, J Collins and Sons, Wang Village Meats and Haymans Tuckerbin.
The Associates again provided an excellent high tea, with anybody not having enough to eat only having themselves to blame.
Thanks are again extended to Ian Miles for his work as starter (never an easy job) and also for helping the writer with the scorecards and result sheet.
This weekend will see Portland golfers contest an 18 hole stableford.
Once again there was no mid week competition due to lack of numbers.
