IT was a great weekend at Portland’s Raffan Park when golfers contested the Squirrel Grippers Day on Saturday.
A big thank you goes to Peter Barnes and Dick Kearns for the days’ organisation.
The winner was Rodney “Ferret” Hutchison with 68 nett on a countback from Laurie Caddis.
Hutchison had the honour of wearing the Pink Suit, Portland’s answer to the Masters Green Jacket and the colour really suited him.
It was a good day for Hutchison who also took out the best scratch score.
Nearest to the pin awards went to Tony Banks on the sixth hole and John Miles on the 10th.
Nearest to the pin following the second shot went to Andy O’Brien on the ninth and Dick Kearns on the 18th hole.
The longest drives went to John Miles on the first hole and Hutchison on the 11th.
There was a putting competition held in conjunction with the winner being Dick Kearns with 23 putts and the most putts went to Greg Simpkins with 43.
Rod Denley wore the pink shirt for most of the year, so he has inherited it for keeps … great putting Rod.
A big thank you to the barbecue chefs Bolts and B1 for a job well done.
Thanks also to the sponsors Portland Golf Club, Tony Murray Trio, Craig Cutting Builder, DW Engineering and Thales.
Without their generosity the day would not have been possible.
SUNDAY
An 18 hole stroke was contested with Rodney Hutchison taking the spoils with 68 nett on a countback.
Terry Heath was runner-up on 68 nett.
Balls went to Dick Kearns and Peter Griffiths.
This weekend an 18 hole stableford will be played and the course will be closed from 8.30am to 10.30am for pennants.
It is the first time for a number of years Portland has fielded a side in the senior pennant series.
Although going down comprehensively to Lithgow last Sunday, the boys have been playing some good golf.
It is good that the club is represented in this division and the club is proud of the team’s efforts.
