Portland Colts travelled to Bathurst for their Mid West Centennial Coal Cup rugby league clash with Bathurst St Patricks and were pipped in a thriller going down 34-32.
They trailed 14-10 break and then 28-10 midway through the second half and fought back to draw level at 28-all with six minutes left on the clock but it was St Pats that finished the stronger to post a win.
The loss was disappointing for the Colts, who did play some good football particularly in the second half to get themselves back into the match.
The Colts were well served by Al Murdoch with his hard running and defence and gained three points in the Joe Walsh Memorial Trophy.
He was well supported by Heath Hotham who took the two points and showed some good skills and topped a fine game with three tries.
John Griffiths played well scoring two tries and took the one point.
Dave Millmore received the Players’ Player award for his fine all round display.
Brett Grabham also played well all throughout the match.
The loss now sees the Colts in a precarious position and will have to start putting in some good performances to make the semi finals.
They travel to Kandos on Saturday to face the competition leaders and then have their remaining three games at home.
Grant Embleton, who suffered a serious injury early in the season, continues to make steady progress and all at the club wish him well with his rehabilitation.
It is pleasing to see Ron Bidwill home after his bout in hospital and cheers from all at the Colts.
