City celebrates 54 years of bowling

12 Oct, 2008 06:25 AM
Lithgow City Women’s Bowling Club members celebrated their 54th birthday with visitors coming from Portland, Wallerawang, Bathurst Panthers, Bathurst Majellan, Oberon, Katoomba, Lawson and Lithgow Workmens Valley.

Morning tea was served to the visitors after which selector Fay King called the cards and wished all happy bowling.

The day, though cool, was bright and sunny which was most welcome after the wet long weekend.

Eighteen ends of triples were played, commencing with roll up for spiders, won by Joan Lavelle.

A beautifully decorated auditorium was the venue for a smorgasbord lunch prepared by Kar Wah Inn Chinese restaurant, which commenced with a toast to the queen and the bowlers’ grace.

President Margaret Ferguson introduced the top table: Foundation and life members Myrtle Eslick celebrating her 90th birthday on the day; Bev Milton newly elected district president who was congratulated on her appointment and presented with a gift; John Buckley, president of Club Lithgow; Mike Johnson, representing John Kelly from Lithgow City Men’s Bowling Club (both men congratulating the women on another successful birthday); Ruth Harries and Julie Beggs (Western District); Ian Hunter for Hunter Mining Method (sponsors of the day); Lee Green organiser and Patron Shirley Addison who was presented with a gift by Mrs Ferguson and suitably responded.

Life members Joan Achurch and Betty Honey also received gifts with special thank you to Betty Honey for her donation.

Ina Hunter, Bev Milton and Norma Farrant cut the birthday cake made by Nerida Leighton and iced by Fay King.

Lucky plate prizes were distributed and selector Fay King announced the away winners Bathurst Majellan, Ann Anderson Lithgow Club, Joan Lavelle and Betsy Thornton.

Home winners were Pam Johnson, Norma Farrant and Margaret Ferguson.

A draw from the losers saw Lola Barker, Pauline Jarvis and Shirley Addison win a handcraft gift made and presented by vice president Irene Watkins.

In conclusion Mrs Ferguson thanked all for coming, making the birthday a wonderful day and wished all safe travelling home.

The national anthem concluded the day.
