Bree does her bit for cancer

24 Jan, 2010 03:32 PM
The Lithgow Kart Circuit will be inundated tomorrow with more than 100 fast women from across the country as the circuit revs up for the fourth annual All Ladies Race Day.

With female karters coming from across NSW, as far north as Townsville in Queensland and throughout Victoria, the event is set to be the epicentre of the women’s karting community while raising much-needed funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

Representing the Lithgow Workmens Club — one of the day’s sponsors — is their trainee Breanna Carson who will race in the celebrity race.

The Workies have enjoyed success in this race over recent years with employees Linda Crowe and Melissa Howarth showing their skills.

Breanna said: “I haven’t had much experience with go-karts … the last time I drove one, I bumped someone over.

“It will be a bit nerve racking, but it could not be worst than facing some of the ladies I play against in the All Age Ladies competition.

“I am looking forward to it and if my racing can help the Breast Cancer Foundation it will be well worth it.”

Last year’s event saw more than 90 women take to the track, with around $24,000 raised for the foundation.

The only one of its kind in Australia, the January 24 event will see the racers competing across a variety of categories from Midgets, aged between seven and 10 years, through to the senior ranks where a number of women over the age of 50 will take to the track.

Competitors will be vying for the Nicole Franks Perpetual Trophy, in honour of the young female racer who was killed in an incident during the Wollongong street meeting in 2002.

The winner will be based on the overall best performance on the day from one of the nine classes, and will receive a pink number plate and prizes, their own trophy and their name engraved on the perpetual trophy.

Other activities will include a celebrity race — which will see both local and out of town celebrities take to the track, as well as a Fun Category of the Ladies Canteen Cup for women involved through karting through their families in both an over and under 30 categories.

There will be a special auction held at the clubhouse tonight to raise additional funds, with some great items up for grabs including two eight lap stints in a Radical Sports Car, which is two seconds faster than a V8 Supercar around Eastern Creek.

This year’s Annual All Ladies Race Day is part of a four day program for the track, which kicked off over Thursday and Friday with a Junior Development Camp, with 84 racers aged from 7 to 15 years.

Today will see a junior only day in the morning including racing for Midgets, Rookies, Junior National Light, Junior National Heavy and Junior Performance, while the afternoon will culminate in endurance racing for the Midgets and rookies (half hour) and the Juniors (45 minutes, excluding Junior Performance) before the track opens for ladies’ practice ahead of tomorrow’s event.

Combined Districts Kart Club Secretary Lillian Stones said: “The event has built into its fourth year and the participation and funds raised are expected to continue to grow.

“The Annual All Ladies Race Day is shaping up to be a great fundraiser for the National Breast Cancer Foundation once again as it enters its fourth year.

“Each year we have a campaign leading up to the event where we have a group of ladies selling raffle tickets together with foundation merchandise, and that is in full swing, with the top three sellers to be presented at the special dinner on Saturday night which will be followed by the auction.

“We then have the actual race day for all our lady racers, including the celebrity race which is set to be quite exciting.

“We are also expecting to host two representatives of the foundation tomorrow which we are very happy about.”

For those looking to try out the sport of karting before they invest in the necessary equipment, Combined Districts Kart Club is able to offer a Come and Try program.

The track is located on Oakey Forest Road at Marrangaroo (behind the Lithgow Golf Club), only five minutes west of Lithgow.
