PORTLAND Bowling Club women celebrated their 60th birthday and thankfully the rain stopped for the day to enable them to enjoy the special day.
The day commenced with a welcome guard of honour for the special guests NSWBA’s director Beryl Watson and the regional director Val Cant to give them both an opportunity to meet all the bowlers from the district.
The clubs represented were Bathurst City, Majellan, Lith-gow City, Oberon, Wallerawang, Lithgow Workmens Valley, Hazelbrook, Went-worth Falls, Lawson and Portland.
Following the guard of honour, the 60th birthday photo was taken and then morning tea was taken after which all bowlers returned to the green for a few ends of social bowls while the lunch was being prepared.
The club wishes to thank these women for preparing the lunch — Edna Walton, Dot Jeffrey, Joan Taylor and Nancy Jeffrey and the greenkeeper and his men for their hard work.
A special welcome was given to Dulcie Tonkin who has given so many years of service to the Western District, and to Elkie Marcroft and Beverly Green from the Portland club.
Both these women are no longer bowlers but they have given many years of service to the club.
Mrs Watson presented Portland bowlers Doreen Miles, Alma Risby and Elsie Kirkwood with merit badges for services to the club.
Mary Abbott spoke about the history of the women’s bowling club, how it started and how it has progressed through the 60 years.
The birthday cake which was made and decorated by Mary Abbott and cut by Portland resident Beverly Milton, Mrs Watson and Western District president Ruth Harries.
The day ended with the singing of Advance Australia Fair after what was a great 60th birthday.
