 Banning's big year

Banning's big year

07 Nov, 2009 08:48 AM
Matthew Banning walked out the big winner at the Lithgow Workmens Club Panthers Mens Premier League Hockey Presentation, accepting the Coach’s Award and Clubman of the Year.

The Panthers honoured their best at a dinner held at the Lithgow Workmens Club, celebrating their seventh premiership win from nine consecutive grand finals.

Matt was a worthy recipient of both awards, showing himself to be one of the driving forces behind the Panthers Club, both on and off the field.

Coach Graeme ‘Muddy’ Muir said Matt is the core of the defence for the Panthers and is dependable in his role as a back. Matt lends the team confidence and teamed with Gavin McKenzie, forms an almost impenetrable wall of defence.

Off the field Matt took on the role of Treasurer following on from past seasons and attended premier league meetings, always looking out for the best interests of the club. As a role model for the younger players coming through the team, Matt was the perfect candidate for Clubman of the Year.

Panthers stalwart Dave Marshall was awarded Player’s Player. The award honours the player who shows a high level of consistency throughout the season and is a prestigious trophy to receive, being voted on by his team mates.

Dave Harris took out the Best and Fairest award after having a fantastic season. Dave stepped up in his role as right half, every week turning out some great performances.

Chris Bennett was awarded the Under 21 Player of the year. Unfortunately Chris wasn’t present to receive his award. Chris was blooded this year into the premier league competition and turned heads with his mature and skillful approach to the game. He stood out in Panthers clash at home against Orange Bloomfield and will be a big contributor to the future of Panthers Mens Hockey.

Panthers would like to thank the Lithgow Workmens Club and Raine and Horne for their support throughout the year and are now looking forward to defending their premiership in the 2010 season.
