LITHGOW hosted more than 150 Western Region Academy of Sport (WRAS) athletes and squad staff members from across the western region for their annual three day live-in training camp over the weekend.
The camp was again sponsored by Delta Electricity.
The athletes were housed at the Black and Gold Cabins at Wallerawang who they proved to be the perfect hosts, cooking a barbecue for the athletes which made for a great bonding night.
The athletes took in a number of sports which included basketball, golf, hockey, lawn bowls, netball and softball and participated in a variety of development and education sessions in Wallerawang and Lithgow.
Sporting facilities throughout the district were used with WRAS speaking in glowing terms of the excellent venues the Lithgow district has on offer.
Education sessions were staged on Saturday morning with a presentation on anti-doping by Ron Clarke from Sport and Recreation, NSW.
Each squad attended a recovery at the Lithgow Pool on Saturday afternoon.
During the weekend the Academy’s strength and conditioning interns put their athletes through rigorous conditioning sessions and tests to gauge their progress with the S&C programs they have been working on for the past three months.
Lithgow athletes were dominant in the hockey squad, making up the majority of numbers and they were put through their paces by head hockey coach Wayne Gaynor and assistant Bob Redding.
“Lithgow is particularly strong in hockey in all age divisions and it is no surprise to see they dominate the squad,” Gaynor said.
“We were extremely pleased with the excellent progression of our members from last year and also the skills and strength of some of the new faces in the squad.”
“This will be the fifth occasion we have had a combined WRAS camp at Wallerawang,” academy executive officer Nancy Haslop said.
“The camp is a vital component of the WRAS calendar and a weekend everyone looks forward to.”
