Unrest in the prison system

12 Mar, 2009 07:01 AM
A demonstration was being planned outside Lithgow Correctional Centre for this morning as part of a campaign for a better deal for members of the NSW Teachers Federation working in the State’s prison system.

Members are angry that the government has not settled a new award for educators in Corrective Services.

They are demanding immediate salary increases in line with those awarded to teachers in the State’s schools and TAFE colleges.

Branch vice president Sue Wilde said meetings have already been held at the jails to discuss the growing gap in salaries between the various sectors.

She said the PSA had this year negotiated a salary increase that inadvertently resulted in prison teachers losing award conditions while not receiving the increases obtained by other public servants.
