Tidy Towns coup

03 Nov, 2009 07:01 AM
There’s plenty of rejoicing in the Lithgow Local Government area following this weekend’s annual NSW Tidy Towns awards.

In the weeks leading up to the awards, the district’s Tidy Towners had high expectations that there would be some major awards come our way following initial announcements we were in line for some good news.

And good news it was when Portland, Lithgow and Rydal took out top Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Awards at Tamworth.

Portland was the major winner, taking out three major awards in category C (population of 1201 to 4,000), including the highly prestigious Overall Tidy Towns Award, which recognises a comprehensive approach to environmental issues such as resource management, heritage and wildlife conservation and community partnerships.

Portland Tidy Towns Committee, in collaboration with local businesses, schools and Lithgow City Council, also took home first place in the Packaging Stewardship Forum Waste Management and Litter Reduction Award for the ‘Prevent Our Recycling Touching Landfill’ project.

This project addressed the need for a recycling collection including waste education and drop off points for e-waste, mobile phones and other recyclables.

The third award to go to Portland was in the category Country Energy Bush Spirit Award for the Gindaay Youth Centre.

“The Gindaay Youth Project has been a mammoth effort for the Portland Community who showed amazing commitment and initiative in the implementation and establishment of a purpose established youth facility which is a geographically isolated community with minimal structured activities available to them locally with all workers being done by volunteers,” Chris Jeffreys, Tidy Towns Assessor said.

Lithgow, the Overall State Tidy Towns Winner in 1997, missed out on the big title this year but did not walk away empty handed,

Lithgow picked up two awards in population category E (10,001 to 25,000); first place in the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water Wildlife Corridors and Habitats Conservation Award and second place in the Overall Tidy Towns Award.

The Lithgow Tidy Towns Strategic Plan 'Greening Lithgow' involves a number of initiatives planned for development and implementation over the next 10 years.

These include revamping of visitor amenities, additional leash free dog enclosures, adventure playground, a skate park, an arboretum, additional tree planting, regeneration of riparian corridors at local creeks and a shared cycle path.

Volunteers have contributed an estimated 6770 hours over the past 13 months.

First place in the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water Wildlife Corridors and Habitats Conservation Award was given to the Mt Kanimbla Corridors, Little Hartley project.

The project is an initiative of the Mt Kanimbla Land Care Group who has regenerated the sparse vegetation on their adjoining properties, planted around 55,000 trees and transformed the area into a wildlife corridor for native animals and 150 different species of bird life.

Rydal, a village of just 80 people, received Highly Commended in the Country Energy Bush Spirit Award for ‘Daffodils at Rydal’, a whole community event initiated by the Rydal Village Association as a way of linking the festival with the history of the area and drawing visitors the town.

“The awards weekend in Tamworth was a great success,” Peter McLean, Chief Executive Officer of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW said.

“It was a fantastic opportunity to recognise those who achieved positive results for their local environment and community.”

“Lockhart was the big winner of the weekend, being awarded the prestigious 2010 Overall State Tidy Towns Sustainable Communities Award.

“The Tidy Towns Assessor, Peter Davis was particularly impressed with the cohesive partnerships formed by the Council, committees and other local community groups ensuring community consultation leading to successful outcomes overall.

Lockhart will go up against the Overall State Winners in each State and Territory across Australia for the national judging of the Australian Tidy Town Award, to be announced in April next year.”
