THE trustees of the Hoskins Trust have announced the winners of the Hoskins Lithgow Scholarship for 2012.
This year Madalyn Cooper and Keira Nightingale share the scholarship.
The scholarship committee was impressed with the quality of all the applications for the 2012 scholarship.
Keira and Madalyn stood out from a strong field.
Madalyn completed Year 12 at Lithgow High School last year, where she was a school prefect and the recipient of both the prestigious Caltex Best All Rounder Award (recognising participation and excellence in academic, leadership, sporting and community services activities) and the Pierre de Coubertin Award (in recognition of her achievements in sport).
She captained the school hockey team which won the CHS hockey championships in 2010 and 2011 and was selected in (and captained) the NSW Bushrangers Hockey team which travelled to South Africa one year and to South America the following year.
Madalyn chose Visual Arts as one of her HSC subjects and gained pre-selection for the ArtExpress Exhibition for her body of work.
She had previously won the Most Successful Exhibitor Award at the 2009 Lithgow Show Society Art Competition.
Madalyn has chosen to study a Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Bioscience at the University of Sydney and hopes to use her qualifications to become involved in the conservation of animals.
Keira was school captain at La Salle Academy and completed Year 12 there last year.
She has been involved with dancing for more than 14 years.
As well as being an accomplished dancer herself, Keira teaches dancing and choreographs routines for performances by her students who range from small children to adults.
She is currently working towards a junior teaching qualification under Sally-Anne Clues, a qualified instructor with the Australian Teachers of Dance.
She has been very involved in netball for more than 12 years as a player and is a nationally qualified umpire and first level qualified coach.
Keira also plays the clarinet and toured with the school to New Zealand in 2009.
She was selected in the International Symphony Orchestra and Choir which reached the finals in the Lithgow Cultural Awards Group Section.
Keira will be studying a new course at the University of NSW — a Bachelor of Arts (Dance)-Bachelor of Education (Secondary).
Her goal is eventually to open her own dance academy with a special focus on teaching children with disabilities.
The trustees congratulate the 2012 scholars and look forward to seeing them progress successfully through their courses over the next few years.
Keira and Madalyn bring to 11 the total number of students who have studied or are studying with the assistance of the Hoskins Lithgow Scholarship.
The Hoskins Lithgow Scholarship offers each year an amount of up to $25,000 to a Lithgow Local Government Area resident who is an Australian citizen under the age of 26 to assist with a tertiary course of study.
