Once again Lithgow leads the world

Once again Lithgow leads the world

27 Oct, 2009 06:57 AM
The climate change event held at the Blast Furnace Park last Friday was a great success.

Organised by the Lithgow Environment Group, local residents joined to form a 350 marking the sustainable level of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere.

The image from 'Lithgow Australia' was among the first to be sent out for this global event.

There were more than 145 similar events in Australia held over the weekend.

The aim was to express people’s concern about climate change in the hope that this will support world leaders to come up with positive agreements when they meet in Copenhagen in December.

In front of the ruins of the Blast Furnace people gathered to form the number 350, the upper limit of parts per million of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere at which life on earth can be sustained.

Lithgow doesnt care. Per capita our town would be one of the world's worst carbon emitters. This is through a combination of coal hungry industry, laziness( it's a small town but everyone has to drive, even the shortest of distances) and down right pigheadedness (anyone using coal domestically should be gaoled). And your paper showed its bias by printing a number of articles on the emissions trading scheme. You gave space to the coal industry but not to the over-whelming need to act on climate change now. Lithgow's refusal to change its industry profile means the end of this town. It wont happen immediately but the end will come. Ask yourselves what employment opportunities will a child born in Lithgow this year have in 25 years' time. My guess is that most people around here just don't care enough about things like that. I know this wont get posted because peolpe around here are fear change so much.
