Federal Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese has announced Reed Constructions Australia will partner with the RTA to widen the highway to four lanes between Station Street, Woodford and Winbourne Road, Hazelbrook.

“The significant investment we’re making in the Great Western Highway is a good example of our Nation Building Program at work creating jobs today by building the road infrastructure that will underpin our future prosperity,” Mr Albanese said.

“Once completed, the new section of highway will improve safety, reduce congestion and cut travel times.”

Federal Member for Macquarie Bob Debus said the announcement clears the way for work to begin on the largest remaining road upgrade project east of Katoomba.

“As well as widening the highway, the upgrade will also see construction of a centre safety barrier, off-road pedestrian-cycle path and a new pedestrian bridge over the highway to better connect the Hazelbrook railway station with nearby shops.”

Other elements of the upgrade include a new stormwater drainage system, bus stops, landscaping and new turning lanes into and out of Clear View Parade and Woodford Avenue.

The upgrade is being jointly funded, with the Federal Government contributing $70 million and NSW Government a further $12 million.

State Member for the Blue Mountains Phil Koperberg said on average the Woodford to Hazelbrook project has supported about 380 jobs a year since it started in 2006.

“The upgrade will benefit the communities of the Blue Mountains and the many motorists that regularly use the highway, adding to the substantial investment we’ve already made into the region’s roads,” Mr Koperberg said.

“I’d like to thank the local community for their patience and look forward to the completion of this vital project.”

Stage One of the upgrade was completed in September 2009 and included widening the Great Western Highway between Ferguson Avenue and Winbourne Road, Hazelbrook from two to four lanes.
