New season will have something missing

New season will have something missing

10 Sep, 2011 04:00 AM
THE Lithgow Swim-ming Centre will open for the 1011-12 season in just three weeks time.

But things just won’t be the same.

For the first time since the centre opened in 1962 there will be only the 50 metre main pool available to cater for patrons.

Preliminary work is scheduled to begin next week on the $2 million construction of stage one of the new aquatic centre which will mean the controversial removal of the learner and children’s pool and the toddler pool.

A spokesman for Council said yesterday the construction work will not affect the use of the main pool.

But the other facilities have already been consigned to history.

"the other facilities have already been consigned to history."

As have many of the funding options made previously available. Let's hope the council can deliver on this project at last. Even if it is a greatly scaled back version.

We remind enthusiastic swimmers that Blackheath Pool is back in action - 50m lap pool, shaded toddlers pool & large leisure pool.

Day passes available - so bring you lunch & picnic in the park under the trees, then back to the water for another swim.

Water averaged 23 degrees across last season. The Pool opens on Saturday 26 November.

Come on up for a swim with altitude.

While Blackheath pool was in limbo, I enjoyed swimming at Lithgow. Rather drive the half an hour there then the 10 mins. to Katoomba pool. Such a wonderful community swimming pool. What a shame the history of Lithgow pool is to be lost. People don't seem to realise architecture needs to represent all decades. Community builds infrastructure, commercialism doesn't. It is the shopping centres that undo the community ie Penrith, Wollongong, Lithgow etc. I find it interesting the comments about Lithgow as I have found it to be a consistently polite and friendly town.
