Quite an impressive transformation is taking place on the site of the old Lithgow Hospital in Bridge Street with long term implications for the support infrastructure available to the residents of the city and district.
On the north western corner of the site a Parramatta based company, Short Developments, is nearing completion with a multi million dollar construction of a children¡¯s daycare centre and, immediately next door, a modern medical centre.
The childcare facility will be the first to be completed, appropriately with a frontage onto Short Street.
It will cater for children from six weeks to six years.
There will be an open day on Saturday, May 3, when members of the public can inspect this new facility prior to its opening.
The adjacent medical centre, which fronts onto Bridge Street, is also in the final stages of construction but is not scheduled for opening until July.
The developments are projects by a company owned by the Takchi family ¡ªbrothers Eddie, Tony and Joe.
Spokesman Eddie Takchi said this was the family company¡¯s first venture into a health related development.
He said it was a state of the art project that would not only be good for public health in Lithgow but would also ease the burden on overstretched existing facilities including the Lithgow Hospital.
He said the centre is designed to accommodate up to eight GPs together with support staff and visiting consultants including pathology and physiotherapy.
The centre will be fully fitted out with the latest diagnostic equipment.
Mr Takchi ¡ª who is also principal solicitor with the law firm, Takchi andAssociates, in Parramatta ¡ª said that when complete the centre will be ¡®ready for the medical profession to walk in and immediately begin practising¡¯.
He said it is intended that all services at the centre will be available through bulk billing.
The company is currently advertising in the Mercury for staff.
A pleasing aspect of the redevelopment has been the retention of the landmark Cocos Island palms in the landscaping of the site.
¡ñ FOOTNOTE: Two blocks of residential units have previously been constructed on the old hospital site by other developers.
Despite these and the latest developments a significant area of land remains for future projects.
