 Feathers are sent flying

Feathers are sent flying

08 Apr, 2008 07:15 AM
It’s that time of year when native birds and passing traffic come into conflict in western Lithgow — with the feathered friends clearly coming off second best.

And Lithgow City Councillor Howard Fisher wants something done to help prevent what he describes as mayhem.

The centre of this conflict between nature and the mechanised world is around the northern end of Rabaul Street at Littleton.

As Cr Fisher explained at the monthly meeting of council there are around eight very large acorn trees at this location and when the acorns are in bloom they provide an irresistible feast for flocks of king parrots.

The real attraction of the acorns as a menu item is when they drop to the road and are crushed by passing cars.

But the parrots have no road sense and are being mowed down by cars while happily munching away.

Cr Fisher, himself a successful bird breeder, said that at least 70 of the king parrots were killed at this location about this time last year.

He said that Council previously had a tree lopping program at Rabaul Street but this ended when Integral Energy placed bundled cables through the foliage.

Since then the trees have grown enormously and this was compounding the problem, adding to ‘the slaughter of these wonderful birds’.

“We need to stop growth in the root system to slow growth,” he said.

“The residents don’t want the trees removed but they want them controlled.”

General Manager Paul Anderson said that reducing the tree size by lopping would not prevent the acorn drops.

But he said Council would seek the advice of arborists and would attempt to secure a more cautious approach by motorists by erecting signs warning about the likely presence of the parrots — ‘something like those signs you see about ducks crossing busy roads’.
