Households name in the life of any community come and go.
One, though, who has been truly durable in the life of Lithgow is pharmacist Hughie Dougherty.
Truly an era in Lithgow’s business life will be ending this week when Mr Dougherty works his last shift.
After more than 50 years as a pharmacist Mr Dougherty has sold his business and has opted for retirement.
“I’m looking forward to some regular meals and regular sleeps,” he said.
Mr Dougherty came to Lithgow in late 1950s to operate the old Lithgow Co-op Pharmacy (on the site of today’s Bargain Mart on the corner of Railway Parade and Inch Street).
He later went into business for himself, firstly opposite the Lithgow Mercury in 1962 and then in his present location right next door to the Mercury.
Importantly, he is believed to be the only late night pharmacist serving public needs anywhere between Penrith and the Central West.
It has been a service that has been widely appreciated by the community.
It is not yet known if the new owners will continue this after-hours facility or if this week’s trading by Mr Dougherty will truly be the end of an era.
