Commemorating Glenbrook disaster

22 Nov, 2009 01:02 PM
On Wednesday December 2, 2009 the Blue Mountains community will commemorate the 10th Anniversary of the Glenbrook Rail Disaster. This tragedy resulted in the loss of seven lives and 51 people being injured.

Mayor, Clr Adam Searle, said, “The Glenbrook Rail Disaster is a tragedy that the Blue Mountains community will never forget. It is an important time to recognise the survivors and the families of the deceased.”

A number of commemorative events are planned for the 10th Anniversary of the Glenbrook Rail Disaster.

On Sunday November 29 a commemorative event is planned to be the held at the Everglades Garden, Leura. This event will commence at 10:30am and conclude at 3.30pm with music, speeches and a sausage sizzle provided. This event is open to the community and guests are welcome to bring a picnic lunch.

“I urge the community to join us in marking the 10th anniversary of the disaster in the beautiful and tranquil setting of The Everglades.

“The Everglades has kindly agreed to donate a portion of the Garden entry fee to NRMA CareFlight, which is a very generous gesture and much appreciated by CareFlight and the Blue Mountains community”, said Mayor Searle.

A plaque unveiling, near to the site of the rail disaster in Glenbrook, is being planned for Wednesday December 2. This event is being held for the survivors of, and the families affected by, the tragedy. Further information on this commemorative event will be provided closer to the time.

A 10th Anniversary Commemorative Dinner will be held on Wednesday December 2 at the Carrington Hotel, Katoomba. This special evening has been arranged independently for the Blue Mountains community and all affected by the tragedy.
