THERE are certain events in a person’s school life that stay with them for the rest of their lives.
One such event was experienced by the students of St Patricks Primary School when they celebrated the arrival of the MacKillop Cross Pilgrimage.
The cross is one of two manufactured in 1986 by the Knights of the Southern Cross from floorboards from the Dominican Convert in Adelaide associated with this Saint in waiting.
Sister Mary MacKillop will be canonisation as the nation’s first Saint.
The cross arrived during the week at the St Patrick’s Catholic Church from Perthville, just outside of Bathurst.
The first cross was presented as a gift to Pope John Paul II during a Sydney visit in 1986.
The one on show at Lithgow was presented to the Sisters of St Joseph.
School principal Pam Haddin said: “This is a momentous occasion for our school as we have an affiliation with Mary MacKillop.
“It is not often that we can be part of such a pilgrimage.
“The students and teachers are very excited, especially the young students who were selected to carry the cross into the church on their shoulders.”
The pilgrimage left Lithgow with the next stop being Richmond.
